In this interview, Dr. Fredric Schiffer talks about healing trauma. He is the founder of Dual-Brain Psychology, a revolutionary approach that posits the existence of two somewhat independent minds within each hemisphere, often with one side more impacted by past traumas. Dr. Schiffer is a pioneering psychiatrist and researcher who has spent over three decades exploring the intricate connections between the brain’s hemispheres and psychological states. This theory and methodology have profound implications for treating conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and addiction.
Dr. Schiffer’s work, which is deeply rooted in clinical research conducted primarily at Harvard Medical School and McLean Hospital, offers innovative therapeutic techniques aimed at helping patients achieve psychological well-being by fostering harmony between these dual minds. His upcoming book, Goodbye Anxiety, Depression, Addiction & PTSD, the life-changing science of dual brain psychology, provides a detailed exploration of this groundbreaking science and shares inspiring stories of individuals who have benefitted from his methods.
Watch our interview and hear Dr. Schiffer discuss the origins of Dual Brain Psychology and its applications in modern therapy. Learn how it is transforming lives by addressing the deeply ingrained early childhood traumas that often go unnoticed but significantly impact mental health.

What is Dual Brain Psychology?
Dr. Schiffer explains that Dual Brain Psychology is based on the idea that each hemisphere of the brain processes trauma and emotions differently. Trauma often gets “stuck” in one hemisphere, leaving the other hemisphere healthier and more capable of recovery. This fascinating theory, backed by clinical trials and research, allows us to engage the healthier side of the brain to support the troubled side. Essentially, we have two minds—one impacted more by past traumas and another that remains more resilient.
This approach is unique because it activates both hemispheres of the brain to release emotional pain, leading to deeper and faster healing. By stimulating the healthier side, we help the troubled side finally let go of the trauma.
How Trauma Affects the Brain’s Hemispheres
Understanding how trauma is stored in different parts of the brain is key to this approach. Trauma is not just an emotional burden—it impacts the way our brain functions. In Dual Brain Psychology, the right and left hemispheres play different roles in trauma processing. The troubling emotions often get trapped in one hemisphere, affecting behavior, mood, and overall mental health. Dr. Schiffer’s theory addresses this by using visual field stimulation and LED light therapy to engage the healthier hemisphere and bring balance back to the brain.
For example, by covering part of your visual field, you can activate a specific hemisphere, helping process traumatic memories more effectively. It’s a simple but powerful technique that can be done in therapy sessions or even on your own.
Visual Field Stimulation: A Key Technique
One of the key techniques Dr. Schiffer uses is visual field stimulation, where patients cover part of their visual field to activate the opposite hemisphere of the brain. This can instantly shift their emotional state. Dr. Schiffer shared an amazing story of a Vietnam veteran who, when using this technique, had a flashback while looking out of one visual field but then felt immediate relief when switching to the other side. It’s fascinating to see how quickly the brain can change its response when we activate different areas.
Using LED Light Therapy for Healing
Another tool Dr. Schiffer uses is LED light therapy, which stimulates the healthier hemisphere of the brain. This technique has shown incredible results in reducing symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Patients who have struggled with severe trauma have reported significant improvements after receiving LED treatments, sometimes with depression scores dropping dramatically.
This non-invasive therapy has no side effects and has been approved by the FDA as a low-risk intervention. In one study, a patient’s depression score dropped from 34 to just 4 after treatment. While this is an extreme case, many patients experience tangible relief through this innovative approach.
Faster Trauma Recovery: Real-Life Success Stories
The best part? Dual Brain Psychology is producing real, lasting results. Many patients who have used these techniques report faster and more sustainable recoveries from trauma, anxiety, and even addiction. Whether the trauma stems from childhood experiences, military service, or any other life event, these methods offer hope for faster and deeper healing.
As someone who has worked with trauma for over 28 years, I’m constantly on the lookout for tools and approaches that can help people heal. Dual Brain Psychology feels like a breakthrough. It doesn’t just mask symptoms but aims to resolve trauma at its core by addressing how the brain processes emotional pain.
