Light Is All Around Us, Even In The Dark

Without the benefits of electricity, (they say it will be back on by Saturday) I was unable to write a new post for today. But I bopped over to the library to re-post one from the past. Yesterday, I posted new from my phone on the Anxiety Schmanxiety Blog. What else would I write about this week? Fear of the darkTo complement that, here is a post about what light is. Enjoy!

light is all around us meditations

While listening to a Richard Rohr CD, I became fascinated and validated by his words. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan Friar author and speaker of non duality. Though he has authored many books, but my favorite title is Everything Belongs. Since this is the message I want people to hear. “You belong!”

I love listening to someone so knowledgeable about history and science and can listen to him all day! He reminds his listeners that God is very often referred to as “Light” in the Bible and throughout history. In fact, words like Truth, Love, Source, Spirit, and Consciousness – all euphemisms for the divine – are often interchanged, symbolized and compared with the word Light in many world religions.

Light is all around us

“Religion intuited what in our lifetime science is validating.” Richard Rohr says so eloquently.

He says that we are now in a position to understand this scientifically (thanks to our favorite scientist, Albert Einstein-love him) that light is the only constant in the world.  It is immutable and never varies. ( I love that description, “immutable”, how powerful is that?)

The only measure of the absolute in the universe is the speed of light. We cannot find any other absolute. Everything else in the world is relative. It changes with the environment, in relation to what is around it. Light is the only thing that does not change. No matter what is happening in the universe the speed of light remains the same. Nothing can alter light, nothing. Not even darkness.

“I have no doubt that in reality the future will be vastly more surprising than anything I can imagine. Now my own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.”

J.B.S. Haldane1927

Rohr continues: We are the first generation to understand that space, time and sound can all be variables and have relativitized any notion of a constant forever. Nature is revealing that to us that everything is in constant flux. Except light.

Light is Science

Science has proven that even what looks like total darkness, which is 96 or 97% of the universe, dark energy, dark matter, darkness, is actually not darkness at, it is actually light. We just can’t see it. Every atom and every electron of the universe is either conserving light energy, releasing photons of light or gathering photons of light.

Light really is omnipresent. All matter is inherently and intrinsically light and all that is happening is the exchange of light in different forms. When we attempt to measure it, it is on an unstoppable course towards infinity in one direction: it is an endless multiplication of light photons that empowers absolutely everything, including our bodies.

Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity says that the hands of a clock slow down when attached to moving objects. Movement slows the advancement of time. As an object accelerates, time continues to decelerate until the object reaches the speed of light. At the speed of light, time stops completely.

In light, everything is all at once, the past, present, and future. When you are in light, you are in what Rohr calls the “eternal now.”  Where everything is connected. It is in this present moment, you can feel and understand the light that you are. The real you.

Light Consciousness: Pure Love

Our happiest moments feel both like eternity and like the blink of an eye because it is hard to relate to them in the structure of time. I remember the day my son was born. At one point I stared at him with blissful wonder at the intensity of the love I felt. If I tell about the day, it becomes a story of labor, delivery, and excitement. But those moments of pure, overwhelming delight seem suspended outside time. More importantly, they seem suspended outside the story. They can be better described as a state of consciousness, light consciousness. I was in the absolute present moment and felt enveloped by the ecstasy of my joy. In the “light,” time ceased to exist.

Darkness no longer exists. Anxiety is no longer there.

Pure love. Pure oneness – light is all there is.

Weigh in, what do you think about light and dark????

  1. Glad to know you’re safe in the wake of the storm. Again, a whole new perspective on something as “simple” as light. Amazing connection I see here, which I’m sure is intentional. Hopefully I can properly communicate this in a way that makes sense – at least to me. Rohr points out that God is called Light in many traditions. You make mention that light is the only absolute, immuatable in the universe, transcending time & space while encompassing all time and space. In other words…light IS. In the Bible, we are told that God uses the name “I AM” and a later passage says “God is love.” So, if I understand the connections correctly, God = Light = Love and from this I conclude that love transcends time and space, love encompasses all time and space, love just IS. I wonder what would happen in my own little corner of the world if I just slowed down enough to allow the transcendent, immutable love to flow around, through, and in me? Jodi, thanks for a beautiful and challenging post, yet again!

The corner of your world will light up, and light all around you as well! Go for it and write about it so I can read it!

Hope the power is soon restored your end Jodi, though you enlightened us with your post already!

Yes indeed, light is actually all around us though we just need to see it and feel it’s presence, which very few are really able to do.

    Thanks for sharing. 🙂

  3. Thank you Jodi! This make absolute sense! And as Greg at Tiny Bit Better states “God = Light = Love” and the reference to “I AM” is the perfect example. It’s not “I will be” or “I used to be” or “when you understand then I will be “I am” but God is “I AM” , absolute, Love, unchanging and unchangeable!

(I hope you are all staying warm!)

  4. I don’t know if it’s normal, but my relationship with darkness and light is very special and is completely linked to my mood or state of mind. I can’t tell you if i prefer light or darkness. I love them both as each one serves for something. I love the light but sometimes need darkness. I can be good in the dark but need the light. When I’m comfortable and secure in a place, however dark it is, I feel perfect, and when I’m anxious and scared, the light doesn’t really calm my fear. In general, I LOVE the natural light (the sun, the moon and the stars), and I love the darkness of the night as much 🙂

  5. Hi Jodi, I have heard Richard say this before, but I am having trouble finding scientific or academic research citable to use for an academic paper. Do you have citations for your sentences on the science here, or know of any?

    THANKS,
    ANDREW R
