Want to know how to create a soul-expanding, body-aligning future? Put some time and energy into planning, opening and nurturing it! One excellent tried and true (not to mention fun!) way to commit to this process is to create a vision board. In this post, I’ll show you how.
But before you get crafty and start cutting out those beautiful photos of your dream possessions, you need to get prepared. You’ll want to discern your wants from your needs, and your victimhood from your highest good, because it’s important to be conscious about what you put your precious life force energy into.
To connect your body and spirit to your vision, you want to bring love, compassion, and light into each aspect.
What is the Law of Attraction?
A vision board has been made popular as a Law of Attraction tool. Simply put, the Law of Attraction suggests that like attracts like. So what you give your attention to, is attracted to you.
“The Law of Attraction is the belief that by focusing on positive or negative thoughts, people can bring positive or negative experiences into their life.” (Wikipedia) So if you want something to come to you- a loving partner, an uplifting community, a safe home, a fulfilling career – you visualize, act and hold gratitude as if it is already true, and it comes more fully. Please listen to my podcast interview with Christy Whitman to hear how a deficit mentality and an abundant mentality can save your life. She tells how you can use the Law of Attraction to live to your dreams.
What is a vision board?
A vision board is a physical and visual representation of your hopes and desires. You can make (or remake) a vision board at any time in your life, after a transition when you’re opening to a new chapter, after a dark night of the soul when you’re ready to veer from the path of suffering, at the beginning of a new session or school year. It puts conscious energy into new commitments.
I enjoy remaking my big yearly vision board in December as I get my marching orders for the new year (around the Solstice) and begin to plan goals and hopes for the next calendar year. However, there are two more times a year that I connect to guidance on next steps and recommit my humanitarian mission and make adjustments to my vision board: Good Friday and the beginning of the school year (September in North America).
My vision boards usually have growing, breathing physical energies. This means that I add notes, post its, pictures and comments throughout the year, and get ideas and sustenance from it, too.
How to prepare
Meditation, prayer, and journaling are great ways to prepare to create your physical vision board.
First, think about different aspects of your life.
- Your romantic partner
- Health
- Home
- Family
- Community
- Career
- Financial abundance
- Spiritual growth
- The Earth
You don’t have to incorporate all of them, just ones that you feel called to be conscious about in the near future. Some of you will be crystal clear about what you desire for next year. If so, spend some time imagining and getting clear on the hows and whys of it. If you’re not already clear- take a few days when you wake up and when you go to sleep where you think about this aspect and allow pictures to form in your imagination about what might be lovely to see manifest.
How do you feel?
Picture each scenario and see how you FEEL if that was manifested. What would you be filled with. How do you see yourself in that situation. Do you feel freer than you do now? In what way? How do people see you when that goal is achieved? How are they effected? What does you home feel like? How is your family about it?
Give yourself time to write in detail about all of this in your journal. Journaling helps you be an audience to your thoughts and feelings, so it will help you clarify what you want and whether that is for your highest good and the highest good of everyone around. When you see yourself from outside yourself, it will give you a better perspective. Ask yourself: What do I want? Why is important to me? What does that look like? How will it affect people/sentient beings around me? What am I willing to do to get it?
After doing this with the aspects you want, look over and highlight the important things that you want to pour the energy of your vision board into.
Making Your Vision Board
Now, it is time to bring your vision board to life. Think: How big do I want to make it? Do I want one overall vision board or separate ones for distinct aspects? How do I want to represent my desires on my vision board? Photographs, magazine pictures, words, dried flowers?
You get to choose how to make it beautiful. Take your time. A pretty board will make your mind happier so you feel more connected than one thrown together. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just visually calming and pleasing.
The Board
Poster board works well, but any surface will do. If you are creative, you can choose anything. I have seen them on driftwood, in a frame, on a cork board, a shelf, a rock, a blanket, a string, a garden plot and more! The sky is the limit, but make sure it’s something you can have access to and put somewhere you will see daily.
Think about the design and placement of your words, symbols, images, and pictures. I like to put my most precious things in the middle, and the rest as spokes around it. Last year, my son just made a list top to bottom.
Say prayers, focus on your breath and think of gratitude as you create your vision board. You are creating your wildest happiness! I like to do it with family members with some music in the background.
How to use your vision board
Hang it where you will see it daily in an open and sunny part of your home or office. If you want to keep it in a private location, that is okay. Take a photo of it, too. So you can look at it any time you want to. In the beginning, as you’re integrating it, you will do this often!
Harness the power of choice
Often what is not going right, what went wrong in the past, our vulnerability, our deficits, and who has more power than we do is distracting. When sooooooo much of life makes you feel disempowered and out of control, that distraction takes our time and energy from going toward what we love, appreciate, and enjoy. Luckily, because you picked what is on your vision board, it will remind you what you do have power over, you and your future. Your soul’s purpose. It will expand your spirit helping you tap more into the power of your higher self. You have control over creating what you want. The vision board will empower you to give your attention to these things.
This is a great TEDx about how to Transform Dreams into Reality:
Harness the power of visualization
“To understand why visualizing your desires is so powerful, we need to look at the brain. Our brain is an incredible machine geared toward making us successful with every action we take. Our brain trains our bodies to prepare for action — when we imagine ourselves preparing for an activity, our brains actually run through the process and send signals to the rest of our body to complete the action. Visualization is nearly as powerful as performing the action. When you visualize yourself living in your dream home, your brain trains your body for that reality.” from MindValley.
Luckily, you visualize in your imagination which is the safe place to nurture and nourish your new reality without fear getting in the way.
Harness the power of action
Now that you are empowered and confident, you can walk into your vision by taking action. Because you are so conscious about your passion and purpose your body will align and actions won’t feel as forced and hard. (The stuck-ness you may have been feeling in your body (as pain or tension or illness) may clear!)

Daily Visualization Time
Now it is time to look at your vision board. Then, close your eyes and visualize the results of having your desires. Again, watch yourself achieving them, and the steps that it will take to get there. Be overjoyed at how things are working simply and easily. See the happiness of everyone this touches. Feel that in your body as if it is in the present moment. Smile and sit in that feeling so it comes all the way through your body. Do this daily.
If a doubt comes up, notice it with compassion and understanding and it will float away.
So there you have it. Everything you need to know about creating a soul-expanding, body-aligning future!
