Why We Need Agency:

Empowerment and Self-Efficacy:

Agency empowers individuals by allowing them to feel in control of their lives. When people have agency, they believe that their actions can make a difference and that they can achieve their goals. This sense of self-efficacy, or belief in one’s ability to succeed, is crucial for mental health and well-being. When teens, for instance, are given the opportunity to make decisions about their own lives, it fosters independence and self-confidence.

Resilience and Coping:

People with a strong sense of agency are more resilient in the face of adversity. They view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow rather than as insurmountable obstacles. This ability to take action in difficult situations increases their capacity to cope with stress and uncertainty. By believing in their power to effect change, individuals can face setbacks without feeling helpless​.
