Harry to Dumbledore: Has this been happening in my head?

“Tell me one last thing,” said Harry. “Is this real? Or has this been happening in my head?”

Dumbledore beamed at him and his voice sounded loud and strong in Harry’s ears even though the bright mist was descending again, obscuring his figure.

‘Of course it is happening inside your head Harry, but why on earth should that mean it is not real?'”

Imagination is Creation

The mark of a good movie is giving its readers tidbits of information, quotes to inspire, and invitations to new understandings.  I wonder if this line packed the punch I see it to mean.

It perfectly piggybacks a comment I heard from author and teacher, Jacquelyn Small during a recent interview. Small mentioned taking workshop participants through meditations, where they would receive inspiration on ways to move forward, see their problem in a new light, or understand an event in a new way.

And they would often ask her, “How do I know that I am not just making it up in my head? How do I know it is not my imagination?”

I can relate, because people ask me the same question, all the time, when I guide them through Guided Meditations. I usually fall back to what Marianne Williamson says: “Imagination is the womb through which we create a new world.”

So it is imagination, but that is exactly right. This is how we create new, we first imagine it into being. Like an inventor who envisions his idea and then builds it. For example, someone asked me, “How do I feel God around me?” I replied, “Imagine God around you and it is.” It’s that easy.

Small said that she asked a dear friend of hers, who is a physicist, how should she answer this question. He laughed and said: “Tell them they are making it all up.” The whole kit and caboodle.

This whole world is our perception of it. And if this is so, it would take so little to change it. We change our mind, we dream a  new dream and then bring it into our life.

Today I am going to keep how I want to see the world in my head: People being kind to one another, caring about each other, taking a stand against violence, and being gentle with the earth.

My book Understanding Pain, Anger, and Fear, helps understand the preciousness behind every complaint, lament, worry, frustration…. If we knew this we can turn the harsh dreams of our lives into a better ones.

What will you create today?

  1. That line resonated with me when I read it. I think it does pack the punch that you see it to mean. At least it did for me. I came across that at a time when I was feeling doubtful about many of my spiritual beliefs, and it reassured me. We have to trust our hearts and value our imaginations. Perhaps the whole universe is the continuing creation of god’s imagination.

  2. Wow, now you got me thinking. There have sure been times when I’ve wondered, was I imagining that or did it really happen. But I guess the answer to that question doesn’t matter; it’s what I’m able to take away from the experience–or non-experience, if you will. Fascinating.

  3. I never watched a Harry Potter movie, and never read any book. I’m curious to try it now.
My dream for today will be to keep dreaming until I make it true. I always need to dream things, otherwise I wouldn’t realize anything. When I want something very much, it just happens. I have experienced it a lot, and I believe it is true. The worst feeling I might have is the feeling of emptiness. When I say I feel empty, I mean loneliness and I mean i have no dream, nothing to look forward to.

You, my dear, know how to dream. I forgot to tell you that I think you were a great shaman in a previous life!

  4. Jodi, what a great post! Dream it and it will happen. I think we have the capacity to make something real if we truly believe. Perhaps this is what a positive outlook helps cancer patients or alleviates depression. In affirming that something is so, we give it life. Unfortunately, this works for the good and the bad. Thus, it’s important to stifle negativity and think happy thoughts. It might sound silly, but I think it works! 🙂

Thanks Bella! I agree, when we think of something, we give it energy. If can choose what we think about, let’s make it work for us!
