Surviving Ups and Downs of Life – Why I prioritize self-care

Surviving Ups and Downs

Do we have control over the ups and downs of life?

What do you think? This life can be pretty crazy. This morning I was just thinking, Can my life get any nuttier? My laundry piled high, dishes left in the sink, worry about loved-ones and the state of the world, I run to one appointment after another all across the city. I celebrate if I’m only 5 minutes late.

The truth is: Yes, it can get nuttier. It can get much, much worse. This busyness is an EASY day for a working mom. No tragedies, no accidents, no illness. No big heart-wrenching rejections, abuse, or getting lay-offs today.

But still crazy.

This is why I am cheerful and grateful that I got up early to get meditation and a workout in before heading into this hot mess. At least I have that done. That is under control. Nobody can take it away from me. I did it. It’s done. This will keep my mind calm and my hormones settled throughout the day.

Surviving Downs

Taking care of yourself ought to be an everyday occurrence. But for hectic people like me, it is rarely a priority. First of all if your mind is focused and your body is healthy, this sometimes prevents the downs from coming at all. Or it minimizes them when they come.

Downs are sometimes out of our control. However, how we deal with them can make them ten times worse or infinitely better. The good news is that we have total control of how we deal with them. If we have been taking care of ourselves, we take life’s hiccups in stride. We know where to get relief, we feel confident of our skills, and we feel comfortable asking for help.

Easier.

When do you need to practice self-care?

  2. Eat whole foods.
  3. Walk outside. Or at least move your body.
  4. Do something creative.
  5. Practice self-compassion.
  6. Get enough sleep.
  7. Celebrate yourself.

What self-care activities do you engage in?

  1. You are so right on. Taking care of myself is often the last thing I do and sometimes I even feel guilty for doing it. This is something I’m working on because, in my heart, I know I need to love and care for myself if I’m going to handle what comes. Thank you for this video!
